Writing as Semiotic Resources

Basing an understanding of meaning on semiosis sets aside models of Writing as Expression and Writing as Communication for models of Writing as Semiotic Resources. The focus shifts away from origins and transmission to What the Other Does with the Semiotic Resources.

Which is to say that our concern is less with writing as expressing or persuading to communicating and more as how a person- or any agent - writing gathers and organizes and uses semiotic resources. We are still looking closely at the agent - aims, purposes, motivations - but are focused on the public act of semiosis: of sign-making that constellates into meaning-making.
